Nation Overview
Society
Culture
Zheng is a highly diverse country thanks to its size, which lends itself to a diversity of ideas. Nevertheless, certain ideas and themes are prevalent throughout many of the Kingdoms. Zhengens put a great deal of belief into the natural order of things; peasants work the land, soldiers protect the land, lords manage the peasants and the soldiers, and so on. Going against the grain is more taboo in Zheng than in other places, and importance is placed on the execution of the law.
Zhengens also place great value on family, both immediate and extended. It is a matter of course for Zhengens to care for their relatives, and the hierarchy of family is likewise important. Obedience to older members of families is instilled in children from a young age, and this often extends to organizations like armies and government, where more senior members of an organization are thought of like older members of one's family.
Government
Zheng is a confederacy of thirteen kingdoms, ruled by what are typically little more than upstart warlords. Zheng has a loose inheritance system based in various conflicting philosophies of legitimacy, and “kingship” is more of a matter of recognition than blood. Historically, the Zheng Confederacy was split into seven Kingdoms, united in worship of the Immortal Empress, their cultural godhead. Now, the various Kingdoms of Zheng play a game of recognition, where out of the thirteen states and various landless claimaints, each person holds exactly Seven to be legitimate.
Inhabitants
The vast majority of the people of Zheng are peasants who work the land. Thanks to their ancient and rich culture they are by no means backwards, however, and they often dress in well-made clothes which show a sense of style, even when made with cheap material thanks to the advanced dying techniques that have been developed. For wealthy Zhengens, silk is incredibly prevalent. Their skin tones tend to be warm, and they have smooth dark hair.
